THE PRIZE:
Scholarships of $1,000.00 will be awarded. The Scholarship Fund will determine the number of scholarships awarded.

Guidelines: A selection committee comprised of business leaders will review all entries. Judges will select the scholarship recipients based on their overall personal integrity and character, their personal achievements, contributions to their communities and schools, and academic accomplishments. Decisions of the judges are final.

ELIGIBILITY: The applicant must be a junior or senior at a high school in Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan and Winston counties with a desire to continue his/her education. Students who entered as a junior but were not a winner may reenter as a senior.

Criteria: The criteria for the award includes: Leadership 20%, Community Service 20%, Academic 10%, Essay 50%. Students should demonstrate their commitment to high ethical behavior and provide documentation in the following areas:

Leadership 20%

· Describe any extra curricular school related activities. Include awards/honors or offices held.

· List past and present employers and describe positions held (if applicable, not required).

Community Service 20%

· Describe activities outside of school and within your community, such as church or special community activities.

Academic 10%

· Enclose a copy of most recent transcript

· Describe post secondary education plans

· Describe awards received relating to your academic achievement

Essay 50%

· Write a 400-word essay on the importance of ethics in business and our community. Discuss your viewpoints and give examples, as applicable. You may want to discuss how marketplace ethics involves integrity, honesty and civility in our community.

· All essays become property of the BBB. Winners’ names may be released to the public and news media for promotional purposes

DEADLINE: Must be web submitted, postmarked or hand delivered by Friday, September 20, 2013, 4:30 p.m.

AWARD: Recipients of BBB Torch Awards scholarships will be asked to attend the Bureau’s Torch Awards Luncheon (date and time to be announced). The scholarship will be made payable to the college or university of which the student enrolls. Scholarships must be applied to student’s college/university within 2 years of receiving the award. The scholarship must be applied toward school related expenses including: tuition, books, room and/or board or other related items.
