Better Business Bureau of North Alabama, Inc. (BBB) hosted its 16th Annual Torch Awards celebration today at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville and announced the winners and finalists of its Torch Award for Ethics. BBB also recognized five North Alabama “Students of Integrity” who were selected to receive this years’ Torch Scholarships. GaN Corporation, a Huntsville based company and Nucor Steel – Decatur served as the event’s Presenting Sponsors. Both companies were winners of the 2011 Torch Award for Ethics.
More than 275 companies and non-profit organizations were initially nominated for the Torch Award for Ethics and were given the opportunity to submit information regarding their ethical relationships with customers, employees and vendors. A prestigious panel comprised of representatives of the academic and business community judged the entries from numerous businesses and organizations that accepted their nomination and provided an entry for the award.
BBB awarded the 2013 Torch Award for Ethics to: LEAN Frog Business Solutions, Inc. in the Small Business Category (1 to 25 employees); AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists in the Mid-Size Company Category (26-99 employees); BP Amoco Chemical Company - Decatur Site in the Large Business Category (100+ employees); Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) in the Government Contractor Category and National Children’s Advocacy Center in the Non-Profit Category.
LEAN Frog Business Solutions, Inc., a Huntsville based business that utilizes Lean Six Sigma processes to help schools in the area of operational excellence and efficiency, was recognized for driving ethics within their organization through engagement and empowerment, with a focus on 5 core values: Never forget we are stewards to each other, our customers and others, Live to Learn, Lead by EXAMPLE, Pursue Perfection in EVERYTHING we do and ALWAYS exceed expectations.
AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists, a family owned and operated foundation repair, crawlspace repair, waterproofing and concrete raising business based in Huntsville, was recognized for their 3 step approach to insuring that they provide their potential customers with transparency, an accurate price and a pledge that if they aren’t the best company for the job needed, they’ll refer the customer to another business in their industry. They also view their customers as family and say that once a job is complete, their relationship is just starting.
BP Amoco Chemical Company, a Decatur, AL based manufacturer of several chemicals found in thousands of essential daily items, was recognized for building a workplace where leadership consistently reinforces and has successfully created strong buy-in of the company’s 5 core values of Safety, Courage, One Team, Respect, and Excellence. Citing a simple mantra in their employee Code: “We say what is true. We do what is right,” the company shared several examples of ways that staff is inspired to put the team ahead of personal success and work towards building the company’s capability, while also trusting each other to deliver on their respective obligations.
Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI), a Huntsville, AL Defense Contractor with Headquarter Operations based in Alexandria, VA, was recognized in part for their nine Core Values: Employees Come First, Leadership, Quality & Responsiveness in Service Delivery, Own and Solve our Customer’s Problems, Ethics, Integrity & Trust, Organizational Teamwork & Collaboration, Open, Honest & Respectful Communications, An Entrepreneurial Environment which Empowers Teams and Individuals, Opportunity Based on Merit and Social Responsibility.
National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), a Huntsville, AL based non-profit organization dedicated to providing the multidisciplinary investigation and intervention of child abuse in Madison County, was recognized for ingraining its scrupulous regard for the highest standards of conduct and personal integrity in its daily operation, as well as the creation of an active Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The Committee oversees a number of cultural and diversity related plans and programs, and ensures that NCAC is continually striving to be sensitive to differences among staff, professionals served and clients. It also ensures that all of their employees have a voice.
During the local awards luncheon, fourteen other companies and non-profit organizations were honored as finalists for the Torch Award for Ethics.

The Torch Awards for Ethics celebration also included the 12th annual presentation of Torch Scholarships which are made available to juniors and seniors in North Alabama. When submitting an entry for the Torch Scholarship, students are asked to write a 400 word essay on what Ethics in the Marketplace means to them.
Scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 each were presented to Brittany Christain of Haleyville High School, Phoebe Finch of Deshler High School, Morgan Gaston of Guntersville High School, Alec VanWagnen of Clements High School, and Matthew Wilson of Sparkman High School.
